Ideas Are Useless
I had an idea for a post. It was to gather some inspiring quotes about ideas. The quotes would then form the foundation of this post about how ideas are useless*.
There you go, that's the idea. I hope you like it as much as I did at the time of writing! You can click away now. (But I have more below, so you're welcome to keep reading)
For around, two years(?) "idea/s" has been a buzz-word. Not one of those words which ends up in resumes, but it keeps sticking its nose in here and there.
There are people who earn money (or try to) simply by thinking of ideas. That's it.
Most of those people bust out quotes like this:
No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world.
- Robin Williams
Ideas are the beginning points of all fortunes.
They're lovely aren't they?
*Ideas are great but they're useless... until you do something with them.
Whenever I hear about someone who gets paid to think of ideas, my first question is "can they execute those ideas?"
I heard of a company who hired someone to think of ideas. The "Idea Creator" thought of an idea and dusted off their hands, leaving the execution to someone else. In fact, the company hired more staff to facilitate those ideas - meaning, the "Idea Creator"couldn't even project manage.
Everyone should be cautious of people who claim to be great thinkers because sometimes, that's the only thing they can do. I have met people who think of AMAZING ideas but they can't facilitate them.
Whilst searching for those quotes (above), I found these - which pretty much sum up my point.
Ideas are cheap. Ideas are easy. Ideas are common. Everybody has ideas. Ideas are highly, highly overvalued. Execution is all that matters.
- Casey Neistat
An idea that is developed and put into action is more important than an idea that exists only as an idea.
Everyone who’s ever taken a shower has an idea. It’s the person who gets out of the shower, dries off and does something about it who makes a difference.
– Nolan Bushnell
An idea not coupled with action will never get any bigger than the brain cell it occupied.
– Arnold H. Glasgow
Every business needs to be able to make ideas happen. I have been thinking of ideas AND EXECUTING them well for 10 years. Some of that work is here. Please feel free to get in contact with me if you have any freelance opportunities.
