What
exactly does an MC do?
Free eBook offer below!
"The good MC
will relax an audience and make it easier for them to
be involved in what is happening; his or her main
focus will be the audience. MCs can make an occasion
come alive. Because its a live
situation, the MC may have to steer the program
through many potential problem areas involving
different people with different levels of
skill."
From "Up Front and in Control" by Peter
Miller
So, why do you need
an MC?
Peter Miller, in
his excellent book on the art of MCing "Up Front
and in Control" suggests that an MC wears many
different hats -
*housekeeper
*communicator
*style arbiter
*conductor
*entertainer, interviewer
*actor, comedian, fireman, salesman
*motivator, leader, diplomat
*journalist, researcher
So, maybe that
answers the question! Ask yourself - how many
conferences/presentations/even weddings have you been
to where nobody seems to know whats going on?
Worse, nobody is "in control".
A professional MC will research the needs/outcomes of
an event and ensure that they are achieved. The MC
will make everything happen as if it were just the
natural way. But recognise that there is a lot of
skill and experience in doing just that. So please
dont ask just anyone to MC your
function/conference/ wedding/et al just because they
offer. Professional MCs add value to your event and
that value will well exceed the fee.
So, what should you expect from an MC?
What we will
do for for your event is to ensure its success.
This is achieved by
being totally involved in coordinating everything on
the day, in association with the other professionals
(PCO, photographer, sound techs, venue staff) that
are working to a similar aim. The MC is the person
responsible to you for the smooth running of the
program.
